School Committee Budget Approval

On March 10, the Gateway Regional School Committee approved a budget that will cost taxpayers money for the closing of three elementary schools.  With increased spending of over $1.3 million dollars at the remaining schools, an extra $200,000 budgeted for students lost to school choice, and a payback to the state for the closed schools of $327,000, elementary school consolidation will COST district taxpayers over $50,000 this year.  This doesn't include extra costs to the towns of Blandford, Russell and Worthington for the maintenance of the closed schools.
On March 15, the Hampshire Gazette reported on local superintendent salaries.  Despite leading one of the smaller school systems, Gateway superintendent David Hopson is identified as the only area superintendent now making more than $150,000.
